💚Dick Counter Day in Greenfield. 💚
At our September First Thursday, Shane Fligor shared a heartfelt tribute to Dick Counter and the impact he had on our community. The following post is adapted from Shane’s words that evening, with his permission, so that everyone in our community can share in his remembrance of Dick.
Former Mayor Dick Counter was, in every sense, a Greenfield boy. He served our country, served on City Council, served as our Mayor, supported our schools and youth programs, worked with the Scouts, and spent years helping local veterans through the VFW.
However you knew Dick, one thing was always clear: he cared deeply about this community and the people who call it home.
Dick was also an important part of Main Street Downtown Greenfield in its early days. When Main Street was just getting started, Dick helped make sure the VFW supported its efforts through a monthly sponsorship. He believed in what Main Street was trying to build, and he wanted the VFW to be part of it.
Looking around Greenfield today—the businesses, the events, the music, the families, the neighbors gathering together—it’s easy to see why Dick believed in it.
Dick wasn’t someone who needed recognition or accolades. He simply saw something worth fighting for and did what he could to help.
So today, we aren’t just remembering Dick with sadness. We’re celebrating him by doing what he loved most: enjoying Greenfield, supporting one another, and being part of this community.
